Hey everybody, interesting discussion and yes, welcome Trish! Now you really have to go to the debates, they are fairly tame right now...well, at least 24 hours ago they were.

Very good observation about my reaction to Ron/Mike vs. Joan/Melissa. I had not thought about it. I do find Ron's attitude towards his son to be protective and I do support him. Perhaps its because Ron in a way is fighting for his son's life. Ron knows the problems that Mike will have to endure if he cannot lose weight. Plus Ron has the other son at home who is so young and already at risk for dying from his weight. He wants Mike to succeed so then they both can go back and help the other son.
Joan's reaction to the idea of Melissa being brought into the boardroom was extreme. If Melissa goes to the boardroom and leaves she's not at risk for anything other than wounded pride. Ron fought for Mike early on to stay fearing if Mike went home he wouldn't be able to make the changes in his life necessary to lose the weight. Melissa is an adult who has been successful in her on right; Mike I still view as not so much an adult although his attitude of pride in his father's weight loss battle is as much a protective response as any parent's. I see the two of them as helping each other to succeed. Joan just came across as hysterical and overly emotional about a negative word being said about Melissa.
I do see them as different while acknowledging that perhaps there is some bias in my reactions. Ron/Mike are fighting for a better life; Joan/Melissa are just fighting for....pride?
