Thanks for the link, batmanbrb. It occurred to me, while reading it, that ancient humans came up with these gods (which are fairly universal from one culture to the next) because they didn't have the scientific knowledge to explain what they didn't understand. They didn't know that the Earth is a spinning ball which orbits the Sun and that's why there is day and night. Instead, humans came up with gods that controlled and explained these things. They also didn't know that day and night, light and dark, good and evil all co-exist with each other, in my opinion.
All of the theories you've heard are certainly a possibility. I think that
Lost is a hybrid of one or more of those things. I do believe that Desmond was correct when he said that they were all "pieces" in someone's game. I think they've pointed us in the direction of who is playing
The Game. Now, what is the result/purpose/reward/prize for the winner of this game? Are these guys simply amusing themselves out of boredom? Are they simply competitive with each other? Or, is there a higher purpose for
The Game? The survival of mankind or the world, perhaps?
I have difficulty with the good vs. evil and the free will vs. fate debates. While I mostly believe in free will, I also believe that fate plays a role too. Furthermore, I believe that good and/or evil cannot exist without the other....
