...Ellen DeGeneres?

I like Ellen, but I honestly thought this was an April Fool's joke. (Then I looked at my calendar and realized it wasn't.) I know she's an AI fan, but what qualifies her to be a judge?

(CNN) -- Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres will join the judges' panel on "American Idol" for the show's ninth season beginning in 2010, a Fox spokeswoman confirmed Wednesday.

"I'm thrilled to be the new judge on American Idol," DeGeneres said Wednesday. "I've watched since the beginning, and I've always been a huge fan. So getting this job is a dream come true, and think of all the money I'll save from not having to text in my vote."

The popular comedian and entertainer will fill a seat left vacant by Paula Abdul, who announced she was leaving the show in August after eight seasons.

DeGeneres will sit alongside Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi after auditions are completed for the popular talent show, which starts in January. Until then, guest judges including Mary J. Blige, Kristin Chenoweth, Joe Jonas and Neil Patrick Harris will fill the empty slot, Fox said.

"We are thrilled to have Ellen DeGeneres join the "American Idol" judges' table this season. She is truly one of America's funniest people and a fantastic performer who understands what it's like to stand up in front of audiences and entertain them every day," said Mike Darnell, president of Alternative Entertainment for Fox.

"We feel that her vast entertainment experience, combined with her quick wit and passion for music, will add a fresh new energy to the show."

DeGeneres brings years of experience in front of a live audience as the host of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," now in its seventh season, and the host of the 79th Annual Academy Awards.

In her new role, the Emmy Award-winning talk show host faces the task of winning over Abdul's supporters, who lamented that her departure would irreparably alter the show.

The singer-dancer turned "Idol" judge was known for her positive comments to the singers participating in the shows. She was also known for her on-camera run-ins with Cowell and other judges in the show.

"With sadness in my heart, I've decided not to return to Idol. I'll miss nurturing all the new talent, but most of all being a part of a show that I helped from day 1 become an international phenomenon," a statement on Abdul's verified Twitter account said last month.

I read that too and just rolled my eyes. She did one episode of So You Think You Can Dance and it was pretty bad. frown I like her, think she can be funny when she's not "trying" to hard, but she can't judge.

I'm not sure I see myself even watching from now on. It wasn't all that great the last time around till the very end. Maybe I'll wait like most do till it's down to 10?

But Ellen? Still shaking my head on that one.

Starting to sound like this is a judges show, and not about singing. How can we pimp ourselves more to the public??!

Personally to me it sounds like they wanted to put a knife in Paula's back with that choice. There is no way for to compete against it.

I like Ellen too, but she does not have the creds to back up being a judge for a long period of time.

Plus do they really need 4 judges?!?! Lameness. Watch they want to stretch the show to 3 hours for more patting themselves on the back.

This HAS to be a ratings ploy.
I think Ellen is a great choice to get viewers because of her popularity, but as for her being a judge, I'm not sure on this one yet. I will watch just to see how it goes, I think she will be funny during the beginning auditions, but can she be serious once it comes down to the actual competition part?

I always thought Reba would be a great choice for an Idol judge. She's a funny lady too, with actual music biz experience.
Ellen is funny and very likable but, what experience does she have in the music industry?

I thought Paula's creds for judging singing were weak but Ellen? Hoo boy. shakehead

I realize that she is popular however I don't care for her. I strongly suspect that she is not nearly as nice as she makes out on TV (remember the dog incident where it looked like she planned to do a tearful plea and set her fans upon the dog agency that ticked her off?).

and this crap of "Oh I'm so surprised. I had no idea that this would happen. I hope Paula isn't too mad." Baloney! Anyone care to guess how hard Ellen's agent was after the American Idol people?

Wow. I think the fact that you've told us you don't like her is coloring your opinion.

I've known Ellen Degeneres since the mid-80's. She is nowhere near what you "strongly suggest".... and as for the surprise... she was surprised at being approached... and everyone was surprised at how quickly this went through.

I usually find you pretty funny. Not so much today.

You know her personally? If so, I'm ready to be educated. My opinion is based on what I've seen and heard and how I have reacted to it. I would love to have better data.

You know for sure she was approached? If so, I take that part back as well.
