Lacey is sick, so Mark is dancing with Anna Trebunskaya tonight.

Louis' costume is god-awful. He's wearing the carwash pants.

Starting the evening: Michael and Anna with a fox trot.

We'll see it after the first set of commercials.

Michael puts on his perma-grin for the dance. I'm not sure if his posture is good or if he's too rigid. His arm extension is great though.

It might not have been good, but it seemed fun.

L: I'm so glad you hung around. This fox trot: brilliant.

B: Your musicality has improved. But your bum still sticks out.

CA: I honestly don't know how you do this...gracious, fluid...very nice.

I think he just kissed Tom.

Scores: 8-8-7. Damn Bruno! Maybe Michael should've kissed HIM.

Michael/Anna - very good (for Michael, anyway!). I was impressed. He seems to do better when he is just having fun.

Donny/Kym - a bit messy in parts, but very entertaining. Donny has so much fun with DWTS, you have to like it.

Donny and Kym have the first quick step of the night.

I try to watch Donny's feet, but I keep getting sidetracked...his smile is infectious. I'm loving this.

B: As a performer you're solid as a rock. Nobody could cover up all the mistakes as well as you did.

CA: You kept the hold close, and your footwork was very nice.

L: You came out full boar from start to finish...you went for it and it was great.

Scores: 8-8-8. Geesh Bruno, don't be at all generous.

I honestly don't think I could be partnered with Kym and stay focused on the dancing. Yowza. I love the Aussie accent, too.

Mark practices with Tony! biglaugh

He's glad Anna stepped in, since he can't dance with Tony on the show. Why not? That would be a hoot! wink

I didn't really like it. Anna and Lacey are completely different, and it was just weird to watch Anna doing Lacey's choreography.

Mark's dance was fun, although it was certainly filled with odd moves.

I'll probably give all my votes to him because he'll need them.

Mark is up next.

He's rehearsing in NY while doing Iron Chef.

That's when Lacey gets sick.

First, Tony Dovolani fills in.

Back in LA, Anna comes in. 48 hours before showtime.

Mark and Anna have a samba.

Um.

It's very hip-hop, which I don't like. Mark is moving very well, and it looks good...but it's a style I don't care much for. I'm having trouble deciding if it's not good or it if it's just not my taste. But not bad for short notice.

CA: That was a mess. (Chuk Liddell shakes his head in the audience.) A lot of nervous energy made things just not flow.

L: You had a bad week and a difficult dance, which is a bad combination. But you're not as bad as CA said...under the circumstances you coped very well.

B: It was like Kung Fu Panda doing the samba....oy.

Scores: 6-7-6. I didn't think it was that bad, and I didn't even like it much!

Mya and Dmitry have a fox trot.

And Dmitry brings in Cloris Leachman to help her get the feel of the era.

This oozes Hollywood glamour: the costumes, the music...but the dance is more him and her, and not them dancing together.

I'm not sure Len will like this. And I don't feel like I'm seeing anything different from Mya.

L: I like the parts that were in hold. But again, too many gimmicks.

B: This captured the aura of Hollywood's golden age. YOu danced like an angel.

CA: Len is officially smoking crack. I loved it: dynamic, fluid, graceful...

Scores: 9-7-9.

Mya/Dmitry - good. doze

Aaron/Karina - a lot of dancing apart (is the jive usually like that?) but it was high-energy and fun. Aaron really is a good dancer, even though I think he's a little twerp.

Aaron and Karina have a jive.

Karina takes him to Elite Athletics for personal footwork training.

Dancing to Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It." It seems wrong to have Aaron in a suit for this.

I can't really comment on the dance...I'm still trying to get past the song choice.

B: You kicked ass!!!!

CA: You're like a little roadrunner! It was so good!

L: That has enough energy to light up Hollywood.

Scores: 9-10-10.

He's being more obnoxious than I usually find him tonight.

Kelly and Louis are up next. They have a salsa.

And she's struggling.

She's not responding to Louis' new approach.

I almost don't blame Len. Every time he tells her what HE'S looking to see from her (like less gimmicks and just straight on dancing) she does the opposite. He's asking to see something specific and simple, and she won't give it to him. It's almost being disrespectful of his opinion. The first few weeks I was with Mya...but the past couple I'm understanding Len more. It's almost like Mya thinks she has this thing won already, and as such doesn't have to take Len's comments seriously. Not a wise line of thinking on her part. She can't win on the fan vote alone, and if she makes it to the finals with Donny...well, she'll have wished she'd listened to Len's comments then.

Kelly and Louis salsa.

Kelly does not look like she's having fun out there.

She loosens up a little by mid-dance...right around the time Louis loses the carwash pants.

But it's a little slow for a salsa, I think.

CA: (gives high fives) That was great! Especially for making Louis wear those pants!

L: (stands up) This is the first time I think you've really controlled your nerves.

B: (gets up and dances on the table. Nuff said.) Louis tosses him the pants that he ripped off.

Scores: 8-8-8

Kelly/Louis - good, not great. I agree, she didn't look like she was having fun...at times she was quite tentative. I am sooo rooting for her this season...but I'm not sure she has what it takes.

Joanna/Derek - they are always good. However, to me she seemed a bit awkward at times (too tall?).

Derek and Joanna have the last dance of the first round, a rumba.

She looks like she's in pain.

Actually, she looks pissed off and constipated.

And I think she caught her shoe on her dress.

I couldn't get past the anger.

L: Well done.

B: You are a love goddess. You're so sexy I can taste it. (ick!)

CA: You dance at your edge. I love watching you.

Team dances next:

Joanna/Derek, Donny/Kym and Kelly/Louis are one team. They have the Tango.

Team Paso Doble is Mark/Anna, Aaron/Karina, Mya/Dmitry and Michael/Anna.

Team Paso is up first. And they don't communicate well.

Michael gives them the teamwork lecture. 3 Superbowls in 5 years, he can do it.

They dance after the break.

Dancing to "I Hate Myself For Loving You."

Aaron and Karina start the solo portions of the Paso.

Michale and Anna next. he's got the anger down. Otherwise it looks a little like a square dance.

Mark and Anna third. Not quite sure what he's doing.

Mya and Dmitry last. Strong finish.

B: At times you missed. But Mya and Dmitry stood out.

CA: Choreography out of sync at times...Mark, you redeemed yourself.

L: Michael, way to pull the team together. Dance got better as it went on.

Scores: 8-8-8

Onto team Tango:

The pros choreographed the routine and taught it to the group.

Kym wants to feature Donny as the only male celebrity...have Joanna and Kelly fight over him.

Oh no, Donny feels like he's getting the flu!

Time to tango after the break.

Dancing to "You Give Love a Bad Name."

This seems better synchronized than the Paso did.

Kelly and Louis first. Much better than her last tango.

Donny and Kym next. He can sell this. And he does.

Joanna and Derek last. Very precise.

The ending is high energy and still technically sound.

I liked it better than the Paso.

CA: (Comes out and hugs everyone. Then butt slaps them for a lift.)

L: The tango is easier because you're in hold a lot of the time. But this was a much more superior dance.

B: Superb as a team. Kelly, you found your mojo!

Scores: 9-9-10!

Team Tango was better for me. Team Paso was out of synch and lacked teamwork.

Michael did better tonight. I don't get the over-the-top praise for Kelly, her salsa was a white hot mess. Joanna, Mark, Donnie and Aaron are doing the best. Mya is technically good each week, but boy is she dull as dishwater. I agree with Len's critique of her, there's just something that doesn't work. Maybe she needed a more charismatic partner or maybe she's just so sure she's got this thing won, she's half-assing it.

ETA: I apologize in advance for how long this is. Didn't realize how winded I got! biglaugh

To me, Mya is really, really good. But, BORING. I agree that I don't know what it is, but to guess, she just comes off as a very good technical dancer without much else. No real emotion.
While I'm all for putting your own twist to the dances (you have to), you can't go overboard with it until the dance isn't even recognizable as to what it was originally supposed to be. She, and Mark at times, are especially guilty of this. They are both fantastic dancers, but they put SO much added stuff in there that it almost seems like a lack of appreciation, even respect, of the dance itself.

This is supposed to be "ballroom". Put a twist in there, personalize it, but don't change it so much that it looks like nothing more than any other modern dance out there.

Joanna is really good. But I can't remember any really fast dances she has done. I know she has to have, but I can't remember them. I only remember the slow ones. She has elegance that is perfect for that type of dance. Can someone remind me of the more fast dances she has done?

Michael puts his whole heart into every dance. He may not always do well, but he throws himself completely into it. I can't help but respect that.

Kelly, God bless her, is fighting her own personal demons through this process. I see her being weak at times and having triumphs at times. She isn't the best there, don't think she should win, but I can't help but to root for her on a personal level. Whatever the outcome of this show for her, I hope it raises her confidence in herself. She has proven she is capable of SO much. I want her to take it to heart and use it to strive in her life for whatever it is she wants to do.

Aaron is cool, a bit cocky, but cool. A bit on the fence with this guy. He's kind of just, well, heck, I can't decide! LOL. Not someone I root for or against. Just.... eh.

Then there's Donny. He's good more often than not and he brings such a work ethic to it. He gets dramatic at times and sometimes I kind of cringe, LOL, but yet, I adore him for it. I have noticed that after all the hoopla he can do, he slows down and really "listens" to the judges. He takes their comments and uses them in the following week. He struggles harder than some, then finds it easier than others. He probably is, truly (on a technical front) middle of the pack. But to me, he knows when to have fun and then when to take it very seriously. He has the correct balance and puts technical moves and passion into every dance he does.

He may or may not win, but he is my choice completely. wink

Thanks Red...I missed the scores, I thought Team Tango was great, but I had to change the channel to catch my next show, so here I am looking to see there scores.

I don't vote, because it wouldn't be fair, I just think that Joanna is so lucky to have Derek for a partner, boy can that kid dance.

Michael & Anna - this was Michael's best dance ever. He had so much emotion and his moves were really great. His scores were right on (except for Bruno - it should have been all 8's).

Mark & Anna - it's awful that Lacey wasn't there. The judges were so harsh on him. I thought his dance was a lot of fun. I thought that was what the dance was all about.

Donny & Kym - I just love Donny love. He looks amazing. And he shines in every dance!!

Aaron & Karina - he has really impressed me lately. He has taken the criticism and ran with it. He's cocky, but it works for him.

Mya & Dimitri - she is always good, but always boring. Stop the stuff that Len hates. Just dance!!!

Kelly & Louis - nice pants Louis. And as Frannie said - it was a mess. How did she get higher than Mark and Michael?? Sympathy votes I think.

Joanna & Derek - Derek gets some of the best dancers. Joanna is amazing. She was so elegant and that dance was very sexy.

Team Tango was so much more in synch than Team Paso. Both dances were great, though. I really wish Natalie was still there. She didn't deserve to go as soon as she did.

What gimmicks?? I didn't see any gimmicks this time........all I saw was straight-up classy hollywood style dancing.........clearly there is a personal issue he has with her.........nothing else......

I don't see the same thing you do.....she is really trying hard to please him.......I think Sabrina Ryan had the same problem with him.....no matter how good she did Len always scored her low.......and I think it also happened with the gymnast too.......sorry...but I am not buying what Len is putting down for her......scoring her 2 to 3 points lower than the other 2 judges....something more is happening....... shakehead

Monkster, what do you think is happening with Len and Mya? I saw the gimmicks...the screen, which I liked...the crawling on the floor, the lack of hold for a good portion of the dance.

For me, she's good, but as others have said boring. In her Foxtrot she never cracked a smile. She doesn't connect with the audience or Dmitry. Maybe Len feels that, too. And she doesn't seem to listen to his critique or maybe it's Dmitry who isn't.

Roblove, Joanna did the mambo and the salsa...maybe the cha cha. Seems like she had another Latin dance, too.

Monkster, think about it this way:

You've got three judges to please. You have no problem pleasing two of them. The third tells you EXACTLY what to do to get a better score...and you don't do it.

Now, if you were the judge saying exactly what needed to be done to get a top score and that person ignored you, would you feel inclined to give a good score when the dancer once again ignores your instruction? I wouldn't.

The first week, yeah, Len had a bug up his butt. Mya's dance was exceptional for week 1. But since then, I've noticed the more specific the feedback, the more she ignores it and does whatever he said he wasn't looking for. I don't even understand WHY someone in that kind of competition would ignore a judges comments. But she does. And then she complains when Len scores her lower.

Len has never criticized her technique as being wrong. A little off here or there, as with everyone else. Clearly she's technically stronger than most of the competition. But That alone doesn't cut it. The judges want to see growth and progress. They want to know that the dancers have taken their instruction and applied it.

Look at what Len said to Michael last night: the first few weeks Len couldn't wait for Michael to go...but now he's glad he's stayed, because the past few weeks he's shown progress. Technically, Michael's probably the worst dancer left. But he takes the judges critiques and applies them to the best of his ability.

I don't dislike Mya. I haven't seen her have a bad dance. But her dances don't inspire me either. There's something missing...whether it's the lack of connection to her partner or to the dance itself, I don't know. But after I see her dance I think "oh, that was nice." After I see Donny dance I think "damn, I want to do that!"

I disagree! Mya's dances are the most entertaining to me and to the large portion of the viewers. There is a reason why her videos are usually the most viewed. I guess you guys like cheesy since Donny is your favorite! And she did smile during the foxtrot, you guys are not paying attention!

She is trying to please all three judges, the problem is that Len doesn't know what he wants.

The first week, he said it wasn't a vienesse waltz. Third week, he thought the rumba had too many tricks. Fourth week, Mya had to pressure Dmitry into not adding too many tricks to the routine but it turns out Len was expecting more. Fifth week, Len was impressed but the other two judges were not for the first time. Sixth week, they thought that gimmicks could work but it didn't. Seventh week, they added some theatrics to show personality (this was for Bruno and Carrie Ann, who both enjoyed the theatrics of the jive) but they kept the theatrics to a minimum for Len. Went well with the other two judges and even some detractors loved the dance! You guys are being too harsh on Mya when she has no idea what exactly she can do to impress all three judges.

Thanks for your view Red.... hug

Anonymous.....that's how I see it as well.....Len did this to another celebrity in another season...I think it was Sabrina and the gymnast in the other season......no matter how hard she tried to please Len.....she could not....and the one week she did....CarrieAnn & Bruno got tough on her.....if it were me.....I would keep doing what I was doing.....and pleasiing at least 2 of the 3 judges......but Len is being too harsh to Mya.....I don't find her boring at all.......and she should have won the mambo face-off that Joanna won......and if you watch that again.....Len was the final decision to give Joanna the win.....over Mya......but clearly Mya was the better dancer.....all Derek did was bend Joanna backward and keep lifting her head up and down over again to make it look like she was giving a blowjob...... orangerolleyes

Here is what Mya said and it goes along with what I said:

Facing Tough Critics: She’s one of the season’s most consistent and best performers. So why is it every week judge Len Goodman gives Mya and Chaplin their lowest score? “I don’t think he has anything against us,” Mya says. “He wants us to keep pushing to the next level so that we can reach three tens. We’re not achieving some factor in our dance. Either it’s too technical and Bruno [Tonioli] and Carrie Ann [Inaba] won’t like it, or it’s too performance-based or gimmicky. So we have to find a happy Medium to please the audience, the three judges and ourselves and be true to the dance.”
