Actually, this was based on Friday Night Lights (the movie). This was very disappointing. After all the buzz, hype, hoopla, ballyhoo, raves, etc., all I witnessed was a teen soap opera with football. It's a better version of One Tree Hill but it is not saying much. The ratings prove me right.

I've been watching from the beginning and also love the series. I can't agree with the soap opera comparisons; FNL tackles issues like poverty, disability, dementia, etc in a much more honest way. It's a powerful drama, and no, ratings are not necessarily indicative of quality, just the opposite in many cases. That's not just my opinion - FNL is on the top 10 shows of 2006 lists of most major tv critics.

(and I say "American", because "Torchwood" is a British show, and "Network" because "Dexter" is on pay cable, I prefer both of these shows, but FNL is great!)
Maybe I'll check out Torchwood. I've heard some good rumblings...

It's backwards...Varsity Blues was (loosely) based on FNL, not the other way around. The show is based on the movie which was based on the book, which came out loooooooooooooong before Varsity Blues, which was way more "soapy" than ANYTHING in any of the three incarnations of FNL.
