The biggest non-compilation drop of any Idol contestant’s album went to Ruben Studdard’s Soulful. The album’s 27-spot freefall from #97 to #124 means that Soulful has dropped more than 20 spots for the second consecutive week. In fact, over the past two weeks the album has dropped an astonishing 50 spots — that’s one quarter of the chart! Considering that Studdard’s album has been on the charts for eight weeks less than Clay Aiken’s Measure of A Man, and is dropping down so rapidly, things aren’t looking particularly rosy for Studdard. The Velvet Teddybear also slipped eight spots on the Billboard R&B Albums chart, from #30 to #38. Since this is Studdard’s 21st week on the charts with Soulful, let’s do a little comparison. Aiken sold 17,217 copies in his 21st week, while Studdard only sold 8,599. That means that the runner-up (Aiken) sold 8,618 copies more than the winner (Studdard) in the same time period. What happened to all those people who voted for Studdard during the American Idol 2 finale? Current sales figures stand at 2,521,245 for Aiken and 1,663,539 for Studdard. With figures like these, one wonders if Studdard will even achieve double-platinum status. Sales from their respective tours show a similar trend, but more on that later. While Clay’s Measure of A Man is dropping almost as fast — 20 spots from #91 to #111 last week and another 17 spots from #111 to #128 this week — this is not as foreboding since, as mentioned above, his album has been on the chart for a lot longer.

Although Studdard’s tour officially concludes this Sunday in New Orleans, LA, preliminary figures have already started coming in, and they’re not looking as good. Of those whose figures are available, Studdard’s best showing was in Upper Darby, PA, where he sold out 96% of the venue and grossed $54,712. His worst showing was in Milwaukee, WI, where he sold out 53% of the venue and grossed just $33,037.

As usual we start with the granddaddy of the album charts, the Billboard 200. The first pleasant surprise this week was the debut of Totally Hits 2004 at #14. However, this probably shouldn’t come as a surprise considering that the album has songs by American Idol’s Big Three — Kelly Clarkson (who sings “The Trouble With Love Is”), Ruben Studdard (“Sorry 2004”), and Clay Aiken (“Invisible”). Enjoying a 26-spot jump this week from #128 to #102 is American Idol 2 runner-up Clay Aiken, whose Measure of A Man sold 12,292 copies this week, bringing his 22-week total to 2,411,465 copies. Not to be outdone, American Idol Ruben Studdard climbed a respectable eight spots this week from #124 to #116, marking the first time that Studdard’s album has passed Aiken’s while descending the chart. Still, this climb in the charts can probably be attributed at least in part to Studdard’s May 6th appearance on Oprah where the Velvet Teddybear paid tribute to Luther Vandross. In more good news, Studdard’s album climbed four spots from #38 to #34 on the Billboard R&B Albums chart. As for Locke’s fellow AI2 finalist, Clay Aiken’s “Solitaire” remained at #97 for the second straight week. Speaking of “Solitaire,” it’s mea culpa time. Last week, an irate fan pointed out to me that in all the bad news I reported about Studdard, I had neglected to mention the one thing Studdard had going for him. After 20 weeks, Studdard’s “Sorry 2004” was still well ensconced at #60 on the Billboard Hot 100, whereas Aiken’s “Solitaire” was barely hanging on in its #97 spot after only eight weeks on the chart. At least Studdard is still on the R&B Singles chart. “Sorry 2004” dropped a notch to #16, while “What If,” Studdard’s latest single, also dropped a notch from #56 to #57. As for the Hot 100 Singles Sales chart, there was no change in the top three this week. Aiken’s “Solitaire” was the #1-selling single for the ninth straight week with 9,533 copies sold for a total of 254,843 singles. JoJo’s “Leave (Get Out)” came in at #2, having sold 6,787 singles for a total of 30,023 copies. That’s 2,700 more than Locke’s 4,059 copies of “8th World Wonder” or 49,315 singles total, enough to relegate Locke to third place for a second consecutive week. Joining Locke on the Adult Contemporary chart for the first time this week is Clay Aiken, whose “Solitaire” debuted this week at #27.

After another long streak atop the U.S. charts, Clay Aiken's second single, 'Solitaire' / 'The Way', came up a week short of his first single -- or maybe three weeks short.
For the week ended May 23, Clay's single slipped into second place on the Nielsen SoundScan U.S. Singles Sales chart, behind Jojo's 'Leave (Get Out),' after nine straight weeks atop the chart. That is one week short of the 10 straight weeks that Clay's platinum first single, 'This Is The Night' / 'Bridge Over Troubled Water,' topped the charts ... and three weeks short of the 12 weeks overall that the first single topped the charts.
Since sales of 'Solitaire' / 'The Way' had slowed to fewer than 10,000 per week, it comes as no surprise that the single dropped from #1. However, 'Solitaire' has finally started to climb the Billboard Adult Contemporary charts, checking in this week at #27 -- so it could still rebound to challenge its predecessor's overall stay at #1.
A bigger question is whether 'Solitaire' / 'The Way' will sell enough copies to be certified gold by the Record Industry Association of America ("RIAA") for sales of 500,000 copies -- a distinction that no U.S. single has reached since Clay's first single and his Idol 2 rival Ruben Studdard's Flying Without Wings / Superstar both accomplished it in July 2003.
Meanwhile, Clay's single remained #2 on the Nielsen SoundScan Canadian Singles Sales chart for the sixth straight week (behind Usher's 'Yeah' every week), after spending its first three weeks at #1 (just ahead of Usher's 'Yeah' every week).
While Clay remains hot in sales, his roommate and former Idol 2 competitor Kimberley Locke continues to do well with her Curb single '8th World Wonder,' which holds the #20 spot on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart based on its strong airplay. Kimberley's album One Love dropped from #39 to #48 on the Nielsen SoundScan U.S. Album Sales chart (also known as the Billboard 200) in its third week, with sales of around 20,000 units. Its three-week sales total is around 100,000 units -- meaning that it will almost certainly outsell Idol 1 runner-up Justin Guarini's self-titled bomb, which topped out at sales of 134,000 and led to Justin's release from RCA Records, to become the fourth best-selling CD from an Idol contestant, behind only Clay, Ruben and Idol 1 winner Kelly Clarkson.
However, the three CDs ahead of Kimberley on this list all were certified platinum by the RIAA for sales of at least 1 million units. We wish Kimberley good luck in her bid to catch up to them.

Totally Hits 2004 – with its trifecta of Kelly Clarkson’s “The Trouble With Love Is,” Ruben’s “Sorry 2004,” and Clay Aiken’s “Invisible” – dropped to #32 from #19. Locke’s fellow American Idol 2 runner-up Clay Aiken’s Measure of A Man dropped 10 spots from #129 to #139, while AI2 winner Ruben Studdard’s Soulful album dipped more sharply, dropping 31 spots from #137 to #168, after 24 weeks on the chart. AI2 winner Ruben Studdard’s Soulful album dipped more sharply, dropping 31 spots from #137 to #168, after 24 weeks on the chart. Feeling refreshed after our walk in the country we decide to put on some R&B tracks, like Studdard’s “Sorry 2004,” which is down nine spots from #22 to #31. An amusing thought crosses my mind as I ponder “What If,” which is another of Studdard’s singles, one that remains at #60 for another week. Upon disembarking from the train, we find the residents of Singlesville mourning for Clay, whose “Solitaire/The Way” single has unfortunately been dethroned by JoJo’s “Leave (Get Out),” and has thus fallen to #2 on the Hot 100 Singles Sales chart for the first time since K-Lo’s “8th World Wonder” debuted at #1, 11 weeks ago. For variety, we throw in some Adult Contemporary, such as Aiken’s “Solitaire,” which is stuck at #27 for the third straight week.

Totally Hits 2004 – containing Kelly Clarkson’s “The Trouble With Love Is,” Ruben’s “Sorry 2004,” and Clay Aiken’s “Invisible” – dropped from #32 to #37.
And finally, we have some concert news. As you probably already know, AI2 runner-up Clay Aiken will be touring on his own over the summer (as opposed to his earlier dual-headlining tour with AI1 winner Kelly Clarkson earlier this year). He will begin July 2 on Good Morning America and kick into high gear all the way through September 19.
Clay also sang “Measure of a Man” and the National Anthem before the NASCAR Nextel Cup race in Dover yesterday. Here is a list of tour dates that we know of right now – it includes a number of state and county fairs (including the Clay County fair in Iowa, of course):
July 2: New York (Bryant Park, Good Morning America) July 6: Bismarck, N.D. (Bismark Civic Center) July 8: Grand Forks, N.D. (Ralph Engelstad Arena) July 9: Sioux Falls, S.D. (Sioux Falls Arena) July 10: Appleton, Wis. (Fox Cities Stadium) July 12: Lexington, Ky. (Rupp Arena) July 13: Charleston, W.Va. (Charleston Civic Center) July 14: Nashville (Gaylord Entertainment Center) July 16: Greensboro, N.C. (Greensboro Coliseum) July 17: Greenville, S.C. (Bi Lo Center) July 18: North Charleston, S.C. (No. Charleston Coliseum) July 20: Portsmouth, Va. (NTELOS Pavilion, Harbor Center) July 21: Roanoke, Va. (Roanoke Civic Center) July 23: Baltimore (First Mariner Arena) July 24: Syracuse, N.Y. (OnCenter) July 27: Harrington, Del. (Delaware State Fair) July 29: Mashantucket, Conn. (Foxwoods Casino) July 30-31: Atlantic City, N.J. (Caesars Atlantic City) Aug. 1: Portland, Maine (Cumberland County Civic Center) Aug. 3: Kingston, R.I. (Ryan Center at the University of Rhode Island) Aug. 5: Gilford, N.H. Further down the Billboard 200, we have American Idol 2 winner Ruben Studdard’s Soulful, coming in at #140 with 8,386 copies sold this week for a grand total so far of 1,705,094 albums. American Idol 2 runner-up Clay Aiken’s Measure of A Man was 10 spots behind at #150, having sold 7,819 copies this week for a grand total so far of 2,566,362 albums. Aiken’s “Solitaire/The Way” single dropped another spot to #3, after staying in the #2 spot for two weeks, having sold over 5,000 copies this week for a grand total of about 280,000 copies so far. The good news is that “Solitaire” climbed one spot from #24 to #23 on the Radio & Records Adult Contemporary National Airplay chart.

The big news this week is that Measure of A Man, the debut album by American Idol 2 runner-up Clay Aiken, bid adieu to the Billboard 200. Since Ruben Studdard, the AI 2 Winner, saw his debut album, Soulful, drop a whopping 60 spots to #200 this week, selling 5,560 copies (bringing his total to 1,710,655 albums sold to date), one can only deduce that Aiken sold fewer copies than that. This marks the end of Measure of A Man's 34-week run on the Billboard 200 and the end of an 11-week run (although it's probably longer than that) where Aiken's album outsold Studdard's by an almost consistent 2:1 margin. Now, since I can just visualize you Ruben fans out there torching my Inbox with flaming emails, allow me to prove it to you. I'm able to do so thanks to these figures that I received from an avid, chartwatching fan. Weeks Since Release MOAM Sales Soulful Sales 16 25,180 23,259 17 30,119 18,039 18 43,664 19,933 19 21,930 12,586 20 16,620 10,472 21 17,217 8,599 22 20,722 10,422 23 24,222 7,490 24 20,114 6,321 25 16,965 8,937 26 19,262 8,386 27 11,239 5,560 Aiken's fall off the chart is not surprising. His album had a long, healthy run on the chart and without any new singles to spur it on, album sales took a natural (if somewhat large 50-spot) decline. However, Aiken won't be lonely for long. At #200, Studdard already has one foot off the chart, although he's doing better on the Billboard R&B Albums chart where Soulful is at #48, having dropped 16 spots since last week. Aiken's "Solitaire" remained in the same position as last week on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart, at #29. On the Billboard Hot R&B Singles and Tracks chart, both of Studdard's singles were faring quite well. "Sorry 2004" remained at #44 for the second consecutive week, while his latest single, "What If," jumped seven spots from #54 to #47, recovering nicely from a one spot drop two weeks ago. As far as singles sales are concerned, Aiken's "Solitaire slipped from #3 to #5.

Billboard 200 Charts
As for compilation CDs, Totally Hits 2004 – a compilation that includes inaugural Idol Kelly Clarkson’s “The Trouble With Love Is,” American Idol 2 winner Ruben Studdard’s “Sorry 2004” and American Idol 2 runner-up Clay Aiken’s “Invisible” – dropped one spot to the #67 position.
In more good news, former American Idol Ruben Studdard’s Soulful regained a fifth of its 25-spot drop two weeks ago, climbing five spots from #73 to #68.
Rounding out the Top 12 is the release of Studdard’s new single “What If,” which debuted at #14 on the list of top-selling singles in the country. Considering its formidable competition, it’s hard to understand why this single was released on the same day as Fantasia’s highly-anticipated single, and not delayed by a week or so, especially in hindsight considering that Studdard only managed sales of 1,353 copies in the single’s first week of release.
Billboard R&B Singles & Tracks Chart
Ruben Studdard's “What If” single dropped six spots from #53 to #59.
The second-biggest selling single of the week is Clay Aiken’s “Solitaire,” which climbed back up the chart from #6 to #2 on the strength of 4,275 copies sold this week, bringing the total so far to 291,121 copies. If Aiken reaches #1 next week, he’ll become the first Idolalumnus to drop from #1 only to later regain it, a feat usually reserved for only a small number of veteran singers.
Aiken’s drop wasn’t as big. His single, “Solitaire,” failed to hold on to its #30 position, also known as the bottom rung on the Adult Contemporary chart, and thus fell off. The good news for Aiken is that the single is still on the Radio & Records Adult Contemporary chart, having dropped four spots to #29.

Billboard 200 Charts
Totally Hits 2004 — with Kelly Clarkson’s “Low,” Ruben Studdard’s “Sorry 2004,” and Clay Aiken’s “Invisible” — sank from #67 to #90.
Billboard R&B Albums Chart
The only album to actually climb a chart this week was America’s Velvet Teddy Bear and AI2 winner Ruben Studdard, proving that even though a new American Idol has been named, he’s still flying without wings. His Soulful album climbed an impressive seven spots from #68 to #61.
Billboard Hot 100 Singles Sales Chart
Continuing on the roller coaster ride he’s been on the past few weeks, American Idol 2 runner-up Clay Aiken dropped back down to #6 this week, which is where he was two weeks ago before last week’s four-spot jump.
Ruben Studdard, whose album was the only one to climb this week, also had the biggest drop in singles sales. His latest single, “What If” traded in position #12 for #21, in its second week of release; a nine-spot drop.
Billboard R&B Singles Sales Chart
Ruben Studdard's “What If” is also #42.

Making a surprise reappearance on the Billboard 200 this week, was Clay Aiken’s Measure of A Man, which moved an additional 6,033 albums for a grand total of 2,592,782 albums sold to date and a very respectable 35 weeks on the chart. While not as big of a fall Totally Hits 2004 – with inaugural American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson’s “Low,” AI2 runner-up Clay Aiken’s “Invisible” and AI2 winner Ruben Studdard’s “Sorry 2004” – saw a four-spot drop from #90 to #94 in what will likely be its last week in the top half of the Billboard 200. Billboard R&B Album Charts Ruben Studdard’s Soulful dropped 15 spots from #61 to #76. Top R&B Singles/Tracks Chart Ruben Studdard’s “What If” only slipped three spots from #65 to #68.

Billboard 200 Charts Only slightly better, dropping 11 spots from #94 to #105 was Totally Hits 2004, the compilation that features “Low,” “Sorry 2004,” and “Invisible” from inaugural American Idol Kelly Clarkson as well as both American Idol 2 winner Ruben Studdard and runner-up Clay Aiken respectively. Alas, Clay Aiken’s reappearance on the Billboard 200 did not last a second week, as his Measure of a Man album dropped more than eight spots to fall off the chart again. Billboard Hot R&B Albums Chart Studdard’s "Soulful" dropped five spots, but from #76 to #81 in its 32nd week on the chart. Billboard Hot R&B Singles/Tracks Chart Ruben Studdard's “What If” dropped 10 spots from #68 to #78 in his 15th week on the charts. Billboard Hot 100 Singles Sales Chart Aiken’s “Solitaire/This Way,” which held the #5 spot last week, dropped two spots this week to #7. Studdard’s “What If” rounded out the Top 20 best-selling singles, dropping three spots from #17 in its fourth week on the chart

Clay Aiken American Idol 2 runner-up Clay Aiken’s “Solitaire/The Way” single was one of a select few singles this week to actually climb a chart, going from #8 to #7 on the Hot 100 Singles Sales chart. In other news, ticket sales for Aiken’s scheduled performance at the Illinois State Fair on Friday, August 13 aren’t going as well as expected since there are still plenty of Grandstand seats available. Sure, Clay has lead the way in ticket sales with 3,586 tickets sold, according to the State Journal-Register in Springfield, Illinois, but that’s still causing the fair organizers a lot of concern. Ruben Studdard As predicted in last week’s column, former American Idol Ruben Studdard’s debut album Soulful did indeed fall off the Top R&B Albums chart after 33 weeks. However, his latest single “What If” is still the 28th best-selling single in the country, a drop of five spots from last week, and #90 on the Hot R&B Singles/Tracks chart, a drop of six spots. Soundtracks & Compilations The biggest drop of the week goes to Totally Hits 2004, the compilation that features Clarkson’s “Low,” Studdard’s “Sorry 2004,” and Aiken’s “Invisible.” The album dropped a dizzying 54 spots on the Billboard 200 — that’s over a quarter of the chart!

Soundtracks and Compilations
Totally Hits 2004 – the compilation album that features Clarkson’s “Low,” Aiken’s “Invisible.” and Studdard’s “Sorry 2004” – looks like this 14th week will be its last on the Billboard 200 as the compilation dropped a whopping 28 spots this week, from #170 to #198.
As predicted last week, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement soundtrack debuted on the Billboard 200 at #27, now that the movie has opened in theaters nationwide. The soundtrack is also #3 on the Top Soundtracks chart, coming in behind A Cinderella Story (another teen movie), and the summer blockbuster Spiderman 2.
As usual, we’ll keep a watchful eye on the charts for you and let you know what’s what.
Clay Aiken
Just call him Comeback Clay. American Idol 2 runner-up Clay Aiken continued his rise back up the Hot 100 Singles Sales chart. A couple of weeks ago, he was at #8, last week he was at #7 and this week, he jumped to #4. If this momentum keeps going, “I Believe” Fantasia better watch her back!
Ruben Studdard
American Idol 2 winner Ruben Studdard saw his “What If” single drop eight spots from #28 to #36 on the Hot 100 Singles Sales chart. The same single also dropped four spots from #90 to #94 on the Hot R&B Singles chart.

Clay Aiken After having knocked Diana DeGarmo down a few pegs last week, Clay’s “The Way/ Solitaire” found itself relegated back to the #3 position on the Single Sales chart this week. His latest single, “I Will Carry You,” which had moved up to #25 in its second week on the Adult Contemporary charts, moved back down to #29 during its third week. Clay found himself at #21 on the Canadian Single Sales Chart this week.
Ruben Studdard Ruben, whose second album, a gospel offering is expected this fall, saw his single, “What If,” continue to fall on the Hot 100 Single Sales, down another three positions to #51 this week.

Clay Aiken Clay had a mixed week, with three entries on the charts this week. His single, “I Will Carry You,” spent its sixth week on the Adult Contemporary charts, having taken a three spot drop from #27 to #30. His single, “Solitaire/The Way,” continued its run on the Hot 100 Single Sales chart, moving down seven spots this week from #5 to #12. In Canada, the single made a bit of a rebound, up from #23 to #19. Ruben Studdard American Idol 2 winner Ruben found his single, “What If,” his only chart entry, down seven spots on the Hot 100 Single Sales chart to #74 this week.

Clay Aiken Clay continued to see-saw up and down the Adult Contemporary chart with “I Will Carry You,” which was down to #33 from #29 last week. His single “Solitaire/The Way” dropped three positions on the Hot 100 Single Sales chart, to #21, and two positions on the Canadian Single Sales to #16. Ruben Studdard The third week has passed since Ruben Studdard’s single “What If” fell out of the charts. Soundtracks and Compilations I previously reported that the Aladdin: Special Edition soundtrack included a version of “A Whole New World” by Nick and Jessica and a new song “Proud of Your Boy” by Clay Aiken, I was incorrect. Apparently a great many people rushed out to buy the CD for these contributions, however the reality stars are only featured on the DVD. Idol fans in the USA will want to run to their local music stores to pick up a copy of Ultimate Christmas 2. The album features contributions by Ruben Studdard and Tamyra Gray with “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” Kelly Clarkson singing “Oh Holy Night,” and Clay Aiken singing “The First Noel.” [Editor’s Note: It appears these are the same songs that were featured on last year’s American Idol: The Great Holiday Classics.] In Canada, a similar compilation can be found in stores this week, entitled Platinum Christmas 2 which features offerings from Kalan Porter with “Mary Did You Know,” Kim Locke and Clay Aiken singing “Silver Bells,” Kelly Clarkson on “My Grown Up Christmas List,” Tamyra Gray and Ruben Studdard with “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” and Ryan Malcolm singing “Let it Snow Let it Snow Let it Snow.” A treat for any Idol fan in North America! And of course, there are the Christmas albums by Ruben, Clay, and George, all coming out very soon, which you can take a look at with the links below.

Clay Recovers Ruben Still Questionable Clay's New Album Breaks Records By RTVC Editor Ron Lemon November 28, 2004 Clay Reschedules Concerts As we reported earlier...reprinted below...Clay Aiken cancelled the first three stops of his Joyful Noise Tour. Those concerts have now been rescheduled. What was originally reported as "damaged vocal cords" is now being reported as an ear and sinus infection. The rescheduled concerts have been tacked on to the end of his tour. November 21: Pasadena, CA is now December 28th November 22: Phoenix, AZ is now December 29th November 23: El Cajon, CA is now December 30th Clay has recovered enough that his Friday concert in in Costa Mesa, California went off as planned. If you are attending one of this concerts you should be aware that clay has a request. A dress code. The show includes a full orchestra, an elementary school choir and a high school choir. Clay says the performers and crew will be dressed in their Sunday best and he hopes the audience will be too. It would also be a nice idea to take a new toy with you. Clay's broth Brett Parker is United States Marine and is the spokesman for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys For Tots Campaign. Marines will be at every tour stop collecting toys. So get in the spirit of the concert, dress up and take a new toy to donate. You'll feel good about it. Ruben Studdard You can read our initial report on Ruben's hospitalization below. Unfortunately the latest news is that Ruben remains hospitalized, suffering from "exhaustion." His new CD, "I Need An Angel" is still scheduled for release on Tuesday. We wish Ruben the best.... But it needs to be said.... Ruben, you need to put your career on hold Buddy, and take the time to save your life. At close to 450 pounds you are lucky you can walk, let alone endure the schedule of an American Idol. The decision has to be made before it it too late. Take the time needed to get your body into a survivable shape. Lose the weight. Do the conditioning. Learn the lifestyle changes that are needed. Do all of that, and make the career second. Even if it means losing the career. It's better than losing your life. Your fans would like you to be around for a while. But you have to do it for yourself. Clay Aiken CD Shatters Sales Record Clay's Christmas CD release "Merry Christmas With Love" sold 270,000 units it's first week. Of course it did this with very little radio air play. As Clay continues to get very little respect from the music industry, his fans give him all the respect he needs. The first week sales is the biggest Christmas album sales figure since Sound Scan started keeping records of that kind of thing. Not only is it the number one Christmas album, it debuts at number 4 on the Billboard 200. That's the highest holiday album debut on that chart since Celine Dion, 6 years ago. Good for Clay. It is always nice to see good things happen to good people. Previous Reports Ruben Studdard Ruben was hospitalized Monday in his Alabama hometown. A rep for J Records tells the AP he fell ill Monday night and was taken to the hospital. He was in the middle of a publicity tour for his new album, ironically titled, I Need An Angel. Ruben had recently started a low carb diet as part of a series on Extra. When he started he weighed in at 449 pounds. But after losing only 12 pounds he quit. He sited a lack of time as the reason for his giving up. According to his record label rep he collasped from exhaustion. His new CD was released Tuesday. It's not known how much of the promotional tour will have to be cancelled. Clay Aiken American Idol runner-up and he who is big enough to not need to share a special with Kelly, Ruben and Fantasia (I just love digging at AI Fanatics) has cancelled the first three appearances on his Joyful Noise tour. According to Billboard it is due to damaged vocal cords. We hope this is true and that the damage is neither serious nor permanent. We would hate to think that Clay is developing "Divaitis" or that the obsessed and disturbed fans, like the ones who recently camped out at his mothers House and disturbed his visit home, are not the reason. AND FLASH - HOLD THE PRESSES We have an interview with Clay set up for Monday. Don't miss it! Meanwhile..... American Idol 4 will premiere at 8/7c, January 18th on FOX. The talent search has already begun. Tens of thousands have auditioned wiping away the records set last year. Once again Reality TV Calendar will bring you full coverage. Bookmark this page and check back often. We will have recaps, photos, commentaries, news and gossip and of course the RTVC staff will once again predict who is going home each week. Would you like to be a part of the coverage team? We are always looking for more volunteers. We are lucky to have humorist Randall The Vandal doing recaps for us this season. But we are still looking for commentators, news and rumors and gossip and those who would like to be a part of the predication team. For more information on writing for Reality TV Calendar please read our Writers Wanted page here. Whether you want to join the RTVC American Idol 4 coverage team or you are an American Idol fan this is your page. Enjoy it and please let us know what you think.

Ruben Studdard Soars to #1 on Gospel Sales Chart! Studdard's J Records Gospel Debut, I NEED AN ANGEL, is the Biggest Gospel Debut in 6 Years! NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 3, 2004--Ruben Studdard's debut gospel album, I NEED AN ANGEL, took the #1 spot on the Gospel sales chart this week with sales topping 96,000 copies, also landing at #20 on Billboard's Top 200 album chart. I NEED AN ANGEL is the highest selling gospel debut since Kirk Franklin's Nu Nation Project in 1998. To put this achievement in perspective, the #2 gospel album this week sold only 8,000. The album is Studdard's follow-up to his multi-platinum 2003 Grammy-nominated debut SOULFUL. The lead single "I Need An Angel" was written and produced by award-winning hit maker R. Kelly. In addition, the album contains new Ruben Studdard renditions of many inspirational classics and traditional tunes, including the much-loved classic"Amazing Grace" and the traditional "Fix It Jesus." Additional tracks include "Goin' Up Yonder," "Shout To The Lord," "Restoration," "We Have Not Forgotten" (featuring Fred Hammond), "Ain't No Need To Worry" (featuring Mary Mary), "Center of My Joy" and "Running Back To You." "I have been singing gospel songs since I was a child and I really wanted to go back to my roots with this record." explains Studdard." "My mother was in the local choir. I went to pre-school church and it was a teacher there who first heard me sing. I was doing solos at a young age - my first one was "I'm Yours, Lord." I continued singing in church and in school and I listened to all kind of music at home. Every song on this album has a special meaning to me." Studdard whose musical journey began in his native Birmingham, Alabama when he sang with the local choir at the age of three chose all the songs for the album, focusing on tunes that have played an important role in his life. Additional producers that contributed to the album include Warryn Campbell (known for his work with gospel duo Mary Mary, Luther Vandross, Brandy and Dru Hill) and Eric Dawkins (of the gospel group Dawkins & Dawkins and writer of songs recorded by Quincy Jones, Tyrese, Commissioned and CeCe Winans). Studdard, who also won an NAACP Image Award for his debut album SOULFUL, spent much of late 2003 and early 2004 touring across the country, giving audiences a first-hand look at why his emotive performances brought him national recognition and acclaim week after week during " American Idol."

Snoop's 'Drop' Tops Singles Chart Fri Dec 3, 2004 11:24 PM ET Printer Friendly | Email Article | Reprints | RSS Top News Twelve Killed in Attack on U.S. Mission in Jeddah W. House Sees Borrowing to Fund Social Security Plan Bush, Iraqi Leader Vow Jan. 30 Elections MORE By Fred Bronson LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Eleven years and one week after he made his debut on the Billboard Hot 100, Snoop Dogg scores his first No. 1. "Drop It Like It's Hot" (Doggystyle/Geffen) pushes "My Boo" (LaFace) by Usher and Alicia Keys out of the way to become the 11th song to advance to pole position in 2004. As Snoop Doggy Dogg, the rapper made his debut the week of Dec. 4, 1993, with "What's My Name?" His highest-ranked song as a lead artist until now was "Beautiful," which peaked at No. 6 in 2003. As a featured artist on Chingy's "Holidae Inn," Snoop reached the No. 2 spot. "Beautiful" was credited to Snoop Dogg Featuring Pharrell, as is "Drop It Like It's Hot." That gives Pharrell his first No. 1 as an artist. As half of the Neptunes, Pharrell has been to the top before as a producer. Pharrell and partner Chad Hugo also produced Nelly's "Hot in Herre," which was No. 1 for seven weeks in summer 2002. TWELVE IDOLS In its third week on Top Gospel Albums, George Huff's EP "My Christmas" (Word/Curb/Reprise) rises 13-11. Huff, the highest-ranked male contestant on the third season of " American Idol," is the 12th competitor from the Fox series to find a place on a Billboard chart. The other charting "Idol" contestants are Kelly Clarkson, Justin Guarini, Clay Aiken, Ruben Studdard, Kimberley Locke, Tamyra Gray, Josh Gracin, William Hung, R.J. Helton, Fantasia and Diana DeGarmo. Huff isn't the only Idol on the gospel chart. Debuting at No. 1 is "I Need an Angel" (J), the second album by Studdard. "Angel" flies onto the Billboard 200 at No. 20, where it is joined by the debut of Fantasia's "Free Yourself" at No. 8. With Fantasia and Studdard making debuts on the Billboard 200 this week and Clarkson certain to debut next week with her second album, "Breakaway," all three "Idol" winners will be on the chart at the same time. TREAT THIS LIKE A 'LADY' Lenny Kravitz debuts at No. 73 on the Billboard Hot 100 with his 15th chart entry, "Lady" (Virgin). Kravitz is not the first artist to chart with a song titled "Lady." In fact, he's the eighth. The other seven and the years they charted with a "Lady" are Jack Jones (1967), Styx (1975), Little River Band (1979), Kenny Rogers (1980), the Whispers (1980), D'Angelo (1996) and Mista (1997). "Lady" extends Kravitz's chart span to 13 years, 10 months and two weeks, counting back to the Jan. 27, 1990, debut of "Let Love Rule." His biggest hit to date is "It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over," No. 2 in August 1991. WHAT BECOMES OF THE 'BROKEN' "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" (Reprise) marches 2-1 on Modern Rock Tracks, giving Green Day its seventh topper on this chart. Only the Red Hot Chili Peppers and U2 have more, with eight each. Reuters/Billboard

First 'Idol' Clarkson Shows Legs (Thursday, December 09 12:22 PM) LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) For the second straight week, a new album from an " American Idol" winner failed to claim the top spot on the Billboard album charts, but the returns for Kelly Clarkson's second release were somewhat more positive that the numbers Fantasia (formerly Barrino) saw in her first week. Clarkson, who came out on top of the first season of FOX's wildly popular talent show, sold 250,000 copies of "Breakaway," the follow-up to "Thankful," which has sold 2.1 million copies according to Billboard. That album moved 297,000 copies in its first week, a debut that came well before the "Idol" Phenomenon reached its peak with the No. 1 debuts of disks by second season winner Ruben Studdard and popular runner-up Clay Aiken. "Breakaway" was the week's No. 3 album, finishing behind the hybrid release "MTV Ultimate Mash-Ups Presents Jay-Z/Linkin Park: Collision Course," which sold 368,000 copies, and last week's champ "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" from U2, which plummeted by 66 percent to 288,000 units moved. In addition to the only minor attrition from the first week of her first album, Clarkson's "Breakaway" also had a higher opening chart position than follow-ups from Studdard and Aiken. That's a bit of an apples-to-oranges comparison, as Aiken's latest, "Marry Christmas with Love" is a holiday album and still managed to move 270,000 copies in its first week (for a No. 4 chart position), while Studdard's "I Need an Angel," which was No. 20 when it dropped, was a straight gospel recording. After debuting at No. 8, Barrino, winner of the last "Idol" season, drooped all the way to No. 21, falling past Aiken, whose "Christmas" slipped only two spots to No. 13. Studdard went all the way to No. 43 for the week ending Sunday, Dec. 5. Although he's outselling his "Idol" compatriots, Aiken could only draw a tepid audience for his first Christmas special. Airing on Wednesday (Dec. 8), the NBC special averaged just over 8.2 million viewers. That audience was enough to finish second for the hour according to fast national Nielsen figures, 10 million behind ABC's " Lost." Aiken finished fourth for the hour among adults 18-49 falling behind, among other things, UPN's " America's Next Top Model." Up next for the "Idol" franchise is the first album from season three runner-up Diana DeGarmo and a new season, premiering in January.

Clay Aiken
Clay’s CD Merry Christmas With Love did well on the charts this week, coming in at #11 on the Billboard 200, #6 on the Internet Sales chart, and holding the #1 position on the Christian and the Holiday Albums chart. According to Billboard.com’s Chart Beat Bonus, Clay’s holiday offering is the biggest selling holiday album since the advent of Soundscan in 1991, having moved 270,000 units in its first week. Clay’s single, “Winter Wonderland,” was at #38 on the Adult Contemporary charts this week, while his previous single, “Solitaire/The Way,” came in at #12 on the Hot 100 Single Sales Chart.
Ruben Studdard
Ruben was back strong on the charts with his gospel album, I Need an Angel, at #20 on the Billboard 200, #1 on the Gospel Albums chart, and #6 on the R&B Hip-Hop Albums chart.

Clay Aiken
Merry Christmas With Love came at #1 again this week on the Holiday and Christian Album charts. The CD from Clay was at #13 on the Billboard 200 this week, and #9 on the Internet chart. On the Adult Contemporary charts, Clay had two entries – “Winter Wonderland” at #24 and “Hark the Herald Angels Sing/O’ Come All Ye Faithful” at #31. Clay’s previous single, “Solitaire/The Way,” came in at #15 on the Hot 100 Single Sales Chart.
Ruben Studdard
After having watched Ruben perform “I Need an Angel” on the Kelly, Ruben and Fantasia: Home for the Holidays special, I felt an urge to buy the CD of the same name, mostly for the sake of getting the catchy tune out of my head. I’ll be the first to admit I was a conspiracy theorist when Ruben bested Clay on that fateful night in 2003, but this album is SENSATIONAL. This week, the gospel offering from one of my favorite new performers, I Need an Angel, topped the Gospel Albums chart for another week, while it was to be found at #43 on the Billboard 200 and #15 on the R&B Hip-Hop Albums chart.

Rock is Big in 2004 According to GMA Year-End Report Switchfoot, MercyMe and Casting Crowns are three bands with very different stories, but together they represent the newest generation of artists and are one of the big stories of 2004 for gospel music sales. The three groups were among the top-selling artists in a year that saw gospel music sales total 43.4 million units, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The rising popularity of Switchfoot, MercyMe and Casting Crowns, has signaled a growing trend for gospel music, according to John W. Styll, president of the Gospel Music Association (GMA). Their successes at retail, radio and at the 2004 GMA Music Awards, coincide with the more than double increase in the rock category of gospel music where artists like Jeremy Camp, Third Day, Relient K, Pillar, Kutless, BarlowGirl, tobyMac and others that appeal to the youth demographic also experienced strong sales in 2004. “Gospel music will always be unique for its wide-ranging music styles and diverse audiences, and black gospel and praise & worship continue to be powerful categories of Christian music, but there has definitely been a measurable shift towards rock, alternative, hip-hop, urban and other styles of music particularly popular with younger consumers. This is a great sign that a new generation of music fans has discovered these and other artists and hopefully indicates a continued bright outlook for gospel music,” said Styll. Styll points to other trends that confirm younger consumer’s impact on gospel music sales. The “ American Idol” Phenomenon significantly impacted gospel music in 2004. “Idol” contestants whose Christian beliefs were prominent in their appearances on the Fox-TV hit show made their way to the charts, with Clay Aiken, Ruben Studdard, George Huff and R.J. Helton among the “Idol” finalists with charting gospel records in 2004. Aiken’s Merry Christmas With Love and Studdard’s I Need An Angel (both sold at Christian retail through Provident Label Group) ended 2004 at the #2 and #12 spots respectively on Christian SoundScan’s Overall Albums chart for the year. Black gospel remained the second best-selling category of gospel music and its younger artists made headlines and were among the strongest sellers in 2004, including Israel & New Breed, Smokie Norful and Kierra “Kiki” Sheard. Israel & New Breed’s critically acclaimed Integrity Gospel release Live From Another Level, debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Gospel Chart after its first week of sales, and number three on Billboard’s Heatseekers Chart. It ends the year at #5 on the gospel charts. Recent Grammy and Stellar nominated, Israel & New Breed performed for an estimated 40,000 at a December Madison Square Garden event. EMI Gospel’s Norful was named Billboard’s Top Gospel Artist in 2004, for the second straight year, as his debut CD I Need You Now and his September 2004 sophomore release Nothing Without You, kept Norful among the top-sellers all year. Fellow EMI Gospel label mate and 17-year-old daughter of black gospel legend Karen Clark-Sheard, “Kiki” Sheard did what no other new gospel artist has ever accomplished in the SoundScan era. Her I Owe You debuted at both #1 on the gospel chart and Billboard Heatseekers chart in August. Among all the highlights, however, Switchfoot, MercyMe and Casting Crowns are the resounding sales success story for 2004, confirmed by Billboard’s crowning the bands as the top three Christian artists for 2004 in the trade magazine’s year-end issue. Switchfoot’s The Beautiful Letdown was the #1-selling album on the Christian SoundScan Overall Albums chart for 2004, thanks in part to Sparrow Records and Switchfoot’s new relationship with Columbia Records, which brought greater mainstream exposure to the San Diego-based band. The album has been on the Billboard charts for 87 weeks, including 31 weeks at #1 on the Christian Albums chart. Switchfoot has been a critic and fan favorite in gospel music since they released their first record, The Legend of Chin in 1997, followed by two more critically acclaimed releases, New Way To Be Human and Learning To Breathe (these three records, which remain with Sparrow Records, were re-released this fall as the compilation: Switchfoot the Early Years – 1997-2000). But it was Columbia’s push of “Meant To Live,” a single that peaked at No. 5 on Billboard's Adult Top 40, and “Dare You to Move,” which is No. 18 this week on Billboard's Hot 100 that brought Switchfoot national attention and a surge in both their Christian and mainstream retail sales. Switchfoot also has had five #1 songs at Christian radio from The Beautiful Letdown with “More than Fine,” “Meant to Live,” “Gone,” “Dare You To Move” and “This Is Your Life.” “Switchfoot is reflective of our newer generation of Christian artists – artists whose lives are greatly influenced by their Christian faith, who write and record music that is informed by those beliefs, but don’t use Christian rhetoric that might otherwise limit their audience. From the start of their music careers, Switchfoot has been making their groundbreaking style of music which speaks eternal truths in a way that relates to their generation, and have patiently persisted until finally, the world has taken notice. We applaud their success,” said Styll. “Thank you so much for supporting us. We’ve always tried to make music for everyone; thank you for being a part of that,” Switchfoot frontman and songwriter Jonathan Foreman, acknowledged at the 35th Annual GMA Music Awards in 2004, where he took home six Dove Awards, the most for any artist that night. In 2004, INO Records’ MercyMe sold more than 1.5 million units in album and DVD sales, including the #4 and #6 top-selling records on Christian SoundScan’s Overall Albums chart for the year— Almost There and Undone respectively. MercyMe’s success was fueled by the momentum from “I Can Only Imagine,” the smash single from Almost There, which first hit mainstream radio in 2003 and continued its impact in 2004. “I Can Only Imagine” delivered an unabashedly spiritual message about what heaven might be like. Millions of radio listeners who may not have ever considered themselves fans of Christian music suddenly found themselves singing along to the song’s irresistible chorus. The song saw heavy airplay on Pop, AC, and Hot AC mainstream radio stations nationwide, and “I Can Only Imagine” ended 2004 as the 20th most-played song on Radio & Records mainstream AC chart while “Here With Me,” the first single from Undone, was 24th and also a big hit at Christian radio. The band from Greenville, Texas, not only earned multiple Dove Awards including Artist and Group of the Year in 2004, but they also were honored with an American Music Award for Favorite Contemporary Inspirational Artist. MercyMe has evolved from being Christian music’s fastest-selling new act in 2001 when Almost There first released to become nationally known as a great rock group that tackles the essential themes of God and love. “The marvel of MercyMe is that a song they first released in 2001 amazingly found its way to mainstream radio more than two years later propelling the band to the national stage and giving the album unprecedented longevity on the sales charts. Almost There has been in the Christian SoundScan year-end top ten for three straight years now, while the band’s follow-up CDs have proven the band is no one-hit wonder. MercyMe’s newest release, Undone, is also in this year’s Top 10 while the prior recording Spoken For was among the top sellers in 2003,” said Styll. Casting Crowns represents yet another face of the new generation of Christian artists and its self-titled CD is the fastest selling debut Christian artist in recent years. At the center of Casting Crowns is Mark Hall, a youth pastor, who until a year ago was writing music primarily for the kids in his youth groups. Casting Crowns grew out of two of Hall's stops along his youth ministry path, first while leading a youth group in Daytona Beach, Fla., then transplanting and growing when Hall moved to a new position in Atlanta. Discovered and signed just in early 2003 by Mark Miller of country music’s Sawyer Brown to be the debut artist for Beach Street Records, an imprint Miller founded and leads for Provident Label Group, Casting Crowns found themselves in the enviable position of making their first major label record with Christian music icon Steven Curtis Chapman as co-producer, Chapman’s first time producing another artists’ work. Hall’s presentation of straightforward and challenging Christ-centered lyrics found a home at Christian radio which embraced hard-hitting #1 charting songs like “If We Are the Body,” “Who Am I” and “Voice of Truth” and played a considerable role in the band’s success. “I want to shake people up and help them see that Jesus is not a religion, and God is not a book," Hall has said. Hall was honored with the Dove Award for Songwriter of the Year in 2004, a first for a new artist. “Casting Crowns proves that fans of Christian and gospel music want more than a watered-down message. They appreciate, and in Casting Crowns’ case, rally to bold and spirit-provoking music that challenges Christians in their faith as much as it encourages,” Styll observed. “And when you tell the combined story of Switchfoot, MercyMe and Casting Crowns, one truth surfaces: music made by artists of faith knows no bounds and emerges uniquely and divinely from each artist’s life to impact a variety of listeners. The GMA doesn’t seek as much to define the music as to celebrate it.” The Christian Music Trade Association (CMTA), a sister organization of the GMA which operates Christian SoundScan, sets criteria for what recordings are included in Christian SoundScan. For an album to be tracked, it must have national distribution and meet one or more additional criteria: 50 percent or more of the tracks on the album contain Christian-oriented content, as determined by the Dove Award Christian content criteria; songs on the album receive national Christian radio airplay, and 25 percent or more of album scans are reasonably anticipated at Christian retail the first week added to Christian SoundScan. The GMA’s year-end reporting only includes album sales. It does not include singles or digital downloads. For a breakdown of gospel music sales in 2004, GMA has compiled the following data: According to Nielsen SoundScan, sales of Christian music CDs ended 2004 virtually flat over 2003 sales. Year-end sales for 2004 were 43,399,000 units, compared to 43,704,000* for 2003. (*The SoundScan totals for 2003 have been restated to reflect Wind-Up Records’ voluntary removal of Evanescence’s Fallen from the Christian marketplace.) The Christian/Gospel category of overall music sales is the sixth most popular genre according to Nielsen SoundScan’s 2004 Year-end report. Gospel music sales outpace sales of Latin, soundtracks, jazz, classical and new age genres. Christian Retail stores accounted for 37.6 percent of gospel music sales, while mainstream retail outlets sold 59 percent of all gospel music sales. Christian retailers’ sales grew from 2003 by nearly one percent and mainstream sales were unchanged. Non-traditional sales (representing direct, venue and website sales) were down 18 percent. GOSPEL TRUTH: It was in one of the early episodes of season two of " American Idol" that celebrity judge Gladys Knight dubbed Ruben Studdard the "velvet teddy bear," and helped send him on his way to becoming the show's second winner. Not that she would change anything given what she knows now, but there is an ironic twist on Billboard's Top Gospel Albums chart this week, where Studdard's "I Need an Angel" (J) is No. 1 for the eighth week (its entire chart run), and Knight's "One Voice" (Many Roads) jumps 9-2 in its second chart week, prevented from achieving pole position by the former contestant she once judged. week 8 sales numbers...... Hey, here are Ruben's numbers for this week 9,108 #109 on the chart. Looks like he moved up two spots from last week. Fabulous numbers!!!!! 109 STUDDARD*RUBEN I NEED AN ANGEL 9,108 -12 10,353 309,955

A Ruben-Clay Rematch by Gina Serpe Aug 3, 2006, 10:55 AM PT Get ready for the Claynation versus the Velvet Teddy Bear in a battle royale. Again. Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken are set for a record store rematch this fall, with both the second-season American Idol champ and runner-up releasing their third albums next month. Aiken releases his new effort, A Thousand Different Ways, Sept. 19, while Studdard's The Return drops Sept. 26. "I've had people ask me where I've been in the past few years so I thought calling it The Return made sense," Studdard. "The first track on the new record is 'The Return of the Velvet Teddy Bear,' so I just shortened it and made it the title of my CD. "With The Return, I'm letting all the people who've followed me from American Idol until now know that basically I'm back." As for Aiken, he explains his title choice thusly: "This is an album of love songs, but they are about all different kinds of love. Romantic love, friendship, unconditional love. There are a thousand different kinds of love; a thousand different ways to tell someone you love them." And a thousand different songs about love to borrow. Ten of the 14 tracks on A Thousand Different Ways are covers of love songs from the past three decades, among them Richard Marx's "Right Here Waiting," Elton John's "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word," Foreigner's "I Want To Know What Love Is," Paul Young's "Everytime You Go Away" and Bryan Adams' "Everything I Do (I Do It For You)." "These are songs I heard growing up," Aiken said. "I've always loved them then and I still love them today, but we decided to do them a little differently. They have new | | | | |
