This thread was down in the Basement, thought I'd move it up here to garner more interest.

I saw the first one of this show, Ramsey actually seems toned down from the British original. Of course the Americans seem to be more aggressive than the British restaurant owners and chefs.

I love this show. I thought the same of Ramsey... but I don't think he "toned it down" on the last episode. The NY restaurant.

I have enjoyed Mr. Ramsey since last season after getting caught into the semi-reality of it. What I find most valuable and rewarding is the nature of the show - the idea of cooking, a universal experience either cooking oneself or having it done for you. This is an experience almost everyone can relate to. Now with his new nightmares, the reality is even more real and at the same time compassionate and healing overall. This new series really has a great premise and impacts some of the hardest working, lowest paid workers in America. I am really glad that Mr. Ramsey has extended his services to real people, working one of the hardest industries.

I need to see a few more episodes but I believe I enjoy the BBC version more.

I agree Tell. I was interested in seeing Ramsey and the American kitchens but the British version is much nicer and more enjoyable.

Does the British version air in America (i.e. on BBC America)?

It does make you rethink eating out!

Yes, I get it a 4pm central everyday Mon.-Fri.

Seeing it makes me feel most all the places I eat are, as Ramsay might say, absolute crap.

Yep I like the BBC version better too.

In the BBC version he teaches & tells them how to fix up their places, and doesn't have an outside company come in & do the job. I guess the American version has a much bigger budget, but I enjoyed seeing them do it themselves.

Then after a restaurant has had his help, he comes back a week to a month later to see if they are still using his suggestions. Sometimes they do, and sometimes they don't.

It seems less forced to me...less put on and more natural. He seems to have a sweeter disposition even though he can still get exercised. AND... I'm learning a whole lot of new terms that would get bleeped on the American version like "you're pulling my plonker."

I've heard a lot of British terms and have watched nearly all the Ramsay shows. But, I think that expression passed me by! I get it, but I've never heard it before.

Last night's show was good. No gross food in the fridge, no messy kitchen, nothing left sitting out that would make you sick. I think the owner/chef was just a nice guy who didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings. He should make his wife the manager and let her get rid of the current one.....

Yeah, that manager was confused as to who the owners were. I'm surprised he didn't get the ax after yelling at the wife. Looks like he turned himself around though. Sometimes, second chances are a good thing.

Just another reason why I like the British version better... even though they're speaking english... most of the time, I can't understand them. Makes it much more entertaining.

...and because Ramsey mostly lives in the UK... its easier for him to re-visit the estabishments.

On a tour while abroad years ago I was stopped in the hall by one of the Brits in our group(Americans, Brits and Canadians were grouped together). He was asking me something and I had to stop him and apologize and tell him, "I know we're both speaking English but I didn't understand a single word of what you just said."

After 3 viewings I've decided I do like the BBC version more. It seems more intimate.

BBC America will run this little info piece just before some of its programs telling people how to puch the closed captioning because of the British accent. its funny in that one time they say not even the British can understand the accent all time and then another time the announcer says something like this is how you would sound if you hadn't dumped our tea into the Boston harbor.

I've heard the tea comment!

I LOVE the accent. I think its sexy as it can be. But I watch EastEnders every week. And yep! I've got that closed captioning on every time!!!!

Like many places, I suppose it's a matter of socio/geographical placement. That cockney accent is a tough one. Right!

I understand most of what is said but occassionally it takes me a few seconds to process some of the dialogue and its always a particulary accent. On Torchwood its the semi nerdy male that I sometimes have difficulty with and even the main female lead once in a while. I don't have problems with Jack. On Dr. Who, I can understand David Tennent well but sometimes with Rose I had a bit of a problem and her boyfriend spoke a totally different language!!!! Martha is fairly clear to me at present.

Americans must sound awful to them. I think we speak perfectly clearly...

I think the accent from Liverpool is the accent I've the hardest time with.

When I went to Ireland... people there were commenting on my accent. What accent? *shrugs* In fact, when I was asking for direction on getting to Galway... the man couldn't understand a word I was saying.. Looked at me... AS IF I was speaking a different language?

I actually had to write down what I was asking...

I just watched a BBC episode I taped earlier in the week, It was a mother and her two daughters with a rest. named Morgans in Liverpool. I understood about a quarter of the dialogue.

I've never had anyone, to my knowledge, have trouble understanding me while abroad. 'Course, I speak Texican, which is universal.

After watching tonights episode, is it my imagination or is there a commercial about every 5 minutes? I don't think this is the case with the BBC version. Maybe that's why it comes off as more personal.

I remember when I visited England many years ago, that a lot of their shows run around 40 minutes, that would probably be 30 minutes for us. Maybe the ones we see as an hour, actually ran a bit longer over there. So, we can't put as many commercials in it, in order to air it in only 60 minutes?

I'm probably COMPLETELY offbase. I have no earthly idea. But, I do think you are correct that our version seems to have more commercials.

An network hour show here usually has about 43 minutes or so of actual content I believe. I wasn't really paying attention last night until towards the end of the show but it seemed like there was even less content than that. I'll have to try and see what the BBC version has.

Ramsey is all over the place... has anybody seen "Gordon Ramsey's F Word"?

Its another show... another restaurant of his... but they interview guest/customers on various topics. This episode was on "the effect of kitchen heat on speam counts".

10/17 show...the Olde Stone Mill Restaurant...MrLurk knows where it is...says we pass it on the way to NYC (I knew Tuckahoe sounded familiar)!

I told him if Gordon fixed it, we should go there sometime...but I'm not sure if it's really fixed (from last night's episode). The editing seemed really all over the place!

Here's an article about it from yesterday's paper link

That guy wanted to be a star more than anything else. The food came second. Frozen junk thrown in a microwave? That was my main thing back in my single days. Who needs to go spend $$ at a restaurant for that?

Just got and watched my two week old tape with "Sebastion's". Sebastion is crazy. Glad he turned around. Seems the show wavers back and forth between nasty restaraunts and incompetent owners.

I was hoping Ramsey would "fire" the owner and let him do his deal in the lobby and let that black lady run the kitchen. She needs to go on Hell's Kitchen! She has been the only one in this series to show fire and competence.

I used to be a pizza cook and actually threw dough. Sad story, I enjoyed it and kind of envisioned rising through the ranks but the owners closed the place. I should have bought it from them but I was too young to realize I could have done that. Then again, maybe I was too young to get enough credit to buy it from them!

Last weeks episode sorta resembled that episode. It was the Irish Pub.. "Finn McCools". The cook (the son of the owner)...(thus the ONLY reason he IS employed)... He doesn't use the microwave BUT EVERYTHING is frozen.... Also while he's cooking... he's drinking MANY pints down with his mates... and when Ramsey would speak with him... his responses were ridiculous. Made him look like a real idiot. Then he threw a tantrum and ran off. But... OF COURSE came back with his tail between his legs! Um... where else could he NOT work well... um.. drink.. and get paid for it.

The best part of that episode... the old man the other cook... he dropped a chicken wing on the floor... picked it up.. and threw it back into the fryer to serve to a customer. Ramsey saw it... confronted him.. and the old man said... by throwing it in the fryer.. IT "STERILIZES" the food.

I would NEVER eat at that restaurant... doesn't matter that Ramsey was there... the same cook is there.

I have been fascinated by this show from the 1st episode I saw (I never watch Hells Kitchen, although I know Ramsey is the potty-mouthed British chef).
I am glad they dispensed w/ showing Ramsey shirtless--he's no Ty from Extreme Home Makeovers. It could be just because I don't find him that attractive, but still, something about a chef w/o his shirt on is a little unappetizing.
I've also noticed that if you look closely some of the unhappy customers in the beginning are also featured in the "relaunch", and are then much more satisfied. Is this on purpose? Are they inviting these particular people to come back after it's been redone? Or are they ACTORS, who are brought in to emphasize the contrast in the before & after?

I'm also floored that some of these "nice" restaurants microwave their food. Are you kidding me?!

Ok, last night's episode, w/ the NJ Italian place--I really think some of the "customers" were plants or actors or something. The one table that thought their food was "terrible", and then how Ramsey spoke to the woman (telling her she was "talking out her ear", and referring to her as "the old bag" as incoming customers walked by)--who talks to a customer that way?! And she took it WAY better than I think most people in that situation would've (let a chef talk to my grandmother that way--she'd have cussed HIM out & probably left w/o paying)! That just makes me think some of that was staged.

It did seem rather strange and staged.............

Except that Ramsey has become a celebrity. If they recognized him then being cussed out by Ramsey would be more than acceptable and she ended up on television--she had to know the cameras were filming this; I expect they had to ask her permission or post something for the customers to know they might end up on TV. Fro some people the price of being called names is worth appearing on TV. Look at reality TV, people do the dumbest things just to be on TV.

Anyone watch the season finale last night? I thought it was
decent. Some of the earlier episodes were stronger in my
opinion. All in all, a pretty good season. In terms of
entertainment, I would have to rank it right up there with
Hell's Kitchen. The advantages of this show over HK were
the different restaurants we saw every week, and the
variety of the business practices and the staff. But like
HK (and most reality shows), many of the scenes were
staged, as claimed in the lawsuit.

But Ramsay is a star and I am looking forward to HK:

The next edition of HK is coming in April 2008 in a time
slot after 'Idol'.
